Well Woman & Family Planning

Well woman appointments are available most days during surgery times. These include cervical smear tests and it is important for women aged 25-49 years to have a smear test every 3 years, and women aged 50-64 years every 5 years, or more regularly as advised by your doctor.

Information on all types of family planning is available during surgery times.

What is cervical screening (a smear test)?

Cervical screening is a free health test that helps prevent cervical cancer. It checks for cell changes (abnormal cells) on your cervix caused by high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV). It is not a test for cancer. We do this in a well woman clinic with a Nurse.

In the UK, you are invited for cervical screening (a smear test) from age 25 until age 64. Cervical screening is not recommended for anyone under 25 years old.

It will take 4-6 weeks to get your results back from your cervical screening.

Transgender and Non Binary Cervical Screening

To ensure all those eligible for cervical screening the Cervical Screening Administration Service (CSAS) has improved its process to ensure Trans-men or Non-binary people with an assigned gender of female at birth receive this important screening.  For those registered with a GP and registered as female will receive communications to invite at the appropriate intervals. For those registered with a GP and registered as male need to ‘opt in’ to the service. To ‘opt in’ please contact the practice, sexual health clinic or transgender health care provider for support, or follow this link
