Meningitis B Outbreak in Kent
We are aware of the media reporting of an outbreak of meningitis in the Kent area, associated with secondary school and university students with likely links to a club in the Canterbury area. We are saddened to hear the news of deaths and hospitalisations of young adults.
Some cases have been confirmed as B strain of meningitis. The UK introduced meningitis B vaccinations into the routine schedule in 2015 for children born after 1/7/2015 with a small catch-up programme for infants at that time born between 1/5/2015- 30/6/2015. Children born before this date will not have received meningitis B vaccinations unless they have later been considered eligible in a clinically at-risk group. Similarly, Meningitis ACWY vaccination was introduced in 2015 for teenagers.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) will be working in the Kent area to identify those at increased risk that may require prophylactic antibiotics we have had no local directions  based on the Kent outbreak. Should you believe you have had any links to the area or affected population please make contact with local authorities for assessment and support.
We would suggest you ensure you and your children are up to date with all vaccinations, you can view yours or your children’s history on the NHS app.
Should you receive an invitation for vaccinations please attend, vaccinations offer the best protection in reducing the risk of infection.
Whilst we appreciate parents/carers will want to ensure the best protection for their children we have to adhere to the current guidance on the routine vaccination schedule.
For those who may wish to seek private vaccinations these will need to be sourced from private vaccinations clinics as we are unable to provide these, these services will incur a charge to yourselves.
It is important that we remain vigilant to the signs and symptoms of meningitis and seek medical advice early if concerned. For further information on signs and symptoms please see the below.

Changes to Routine Childhood Immunisation Programme

From the 1st July 2025 there are changes to the routine immunisation schedule. These changes have been implemented by NHS England Screening and Immunisations teams following extensive research and approval from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and immunisation (JVCI).

Infants born on or after the 1st July 2025 will follow the new routine schedule as indicated in the table below. The primary course of vaccines (the set of three at 8 weeks, 12weeks and 16weeks) has slightly changed in the timings of the Pneumococcal and Meningitis B vaccines, the remaining vaccines are unchanged.

Additional changes affect children born on or after the 1st July 2024, whom will now be approaching their first birthday and therefore, their 1year old immunisations. They will continue to be invited for their 1year old immunisations but will no longer receive the Hib/Men C vaccine. At this appointment they will continue to receive MMR, Pneumococcal and Meningitis B vaccines. This group of children will be invited again at 18 months of age for a second MMR and an additional DTaP/IPV/Hib/HepB. At 3 years 4 months they will be invited for their preschool booster which consists of dTaP/IPV at this appointment.
